Transform Your Smile: Discover the Benefits of Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery

Your gums are the “unsung heroes” of your smile! They surround, protect, and help to stabilize the teeth. The shape, size, and proportion of your gums also contribute to the overall aesthetics of your smile. When they appear too big, too small, or otherwise out of balance with your teeth, you may be a good candidate for cosmetic periodontal surgery at the Scottsdale, Arizona office of Desert Ridge Periodontics & Implant Dentistry.

What surgical procedures do you offer to make my gums look better?

We provide three key cosmetic periodontics services:

  • Aesthetic crown lengthening & Gingival/gum contouring
  • Soft tissue grafting
  • Ridge augmentation

Why would I need these procedures?

Crown lengthening is generally recommended for patients with “gummy” smiles. When you smile, your teeth may look short as more gum tissue is exposed. We can reveal more of the white part of the tooth, or the crown. In doing so, your gums do not overpower the look of your smile. Your gumline appears to be in balance with your teeth and the rest of your smile. When both the gums and the underlying bone are recontoured to alter the shape of your gumline, this process is known as crown lengthening. When only the gums are changed, we call this procedure gingival contouring.

Soft tissue grafting addresses the issue of insufficient tooth exposure in your smile. This can be due to progressive gum recession. As gums continue to recede or pull away from your teeth, the roots may be exposed and vulnerable to serious damage. By building up the gumline with grafting, we eliminate that “long in the tooth” appearance and support a more pleasing, balanced smile. We also protect the teeth from future damage caused by root exposure.

Lastly, ridge augmentation builds up or fills in unsightly depressions or indentations in the gumline that result from tooth loss.

How do these procedures feel?

As a specialty practice, our team has invested in advanced laser systems. These technologies allow us to remove, shape, and contour tissues without the laser actually touching the treatment sites. This means we can effectively and precisely alter the gumline with minimal discomfort. Since no cutting is involved, the process is not invasive and is not associated with a lengthy recovery and downtime. Due to the laser’s capabilities, tissue regeneration and natural healing are encouraged. The laser can also precisely target tissues, making it a particularly safe option as tissues outside the treatment area are not touched. We can also do more treatment-wise in less time with lasers, thanks to it being a gentler alternative to conventional periodontal surgery.
