Lasers for effective gum disease surgery without scalpels, sutures, and other undesirables

Lasers are a great tool for Desert Ridge Periodontics & Implant Dentistry to perform many common dental treatments in the safest, most comfortable, and most precise way possible. Laser periodontal therapy embodies this approach perfectly! Our team in Scottsdale, Arizona, uses laser technology as an alternative to conventional periodontal surgery.

How does laser periodontal therapy compare to conventional surgery?

Conventional approaches involve cutting open the damaged gum tissue. Treatment is performed through these incisions. Once complete, the openings must be closed with sutures/stitches. Lasers allow our team to avoid using any cutting techniques or tools, such as scalpels. Since there is no cutting, we don’t need to apply sutures. In fact, the lasers that remove disease-causing bacteria and damaged tissues never touch the gums or treatment site at all. This makes the laser a non-invasive alternative to traditional surgery to remove harmful substances and damage, promote healing, and treat gum disease at its source.

Why are non-invasive treatments so appealing?

Generally, the less our team has to alter tissues, the better off you will be. Non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures like laser periodontal therapy:

  • Preserve the utmost healthy tissue
  • Provide a targeted treatment
  • Are more comfortable
  • They are associated with fewer complications (like bleeding)
  • Require little to no downtime
  • They are safe and appropriate for many patients, including those with conditions like diabetes
  • They are drug-free, as the process is generally well-tolerated

What can I expect from laser treatment?

Surgical laser periodontal therapy is known as LANAP®. Shorthand for “laser-assisted new attachment procedure,” LANAP® treatment first involves understanding your needs. We take special care when planning treatment. Professional instruments are used to identify the depth of the spaces or periodontal pockets between the teeth and gums. These pockets form as a result of gum disease. Without treatment, they harbor bacteria and plaque, and the pockets grow larger. Understanding the size of these pockets and the extent of the damage to your gums guides our treatment recommendations and ensures effective treatment planning.

We then pass the laser over the damaged tissues precisely. We do so twice; first, the laser is introduced to kill disease-causing bacteria, and second, the laser energy is reintroduced to kill remaining bacteria and create a stable fibrin clot. This blood clot provides a natural seal, which protects the healing site and supports the regeneration of bone and tissue.
