Dental lasers: A highly precise, comfortable, and healing treatment alternative
We recognize that there are many dentists’ offices to choose from in the greater Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Glendale, Peoria, and Mesa, Arizona area. However, at Desert Ridge Periodontics & Implant Dentistry, you benefit from highly advanced and specialty care. Our dental team of Drs. Terry Peterson and Stephanie Troglin also include board-certified periodontist, Dr. Dan Indech. As a periodontist, Dr. Indech is uniquely trained and qualified to diagnose and treat many conditions that affect the supportive tissues in the jaw. These conditions include gum disease. Many of our sophisticated dental laser procedures are designed to treat damaged gums, so your teeth continue to get the support that they need and you remain your healthiest.
How do lasers keep my gums and mouth healthy?
Lasers are used in all sorts of medical applications and treatments. The laser is directed toward the damaged or deteriorated tissues that need to be treated. As the laser is activated, it delivers energy in the form of light to the body’s cells. Since water makes up around 50% of your total body weight and is critical for maintaining the structure and function of cells, the energy from the laser light interacts with and heats the water in the body’s cells to the point where they burst. Due to this process, we can use lasers in surgical procedures (like periodontal or gum therapy) to vaporize or cut tissues.
What are the benefits of using lasers like this?
The process above is associated with many benefits.
First, the laser never actually touches any tissue. This makes it a very non-invasive procedure.
Second, bleeding is minimized as the high-energy light generated and delivered by the laser promotes hemostasis (clotting) of the exposed blood vessels.
Third, the process is comfortable as no cutting or invasive techniques are involved with laser-assisted treatment.
Fourth, laser treatment is very precise. The laser does not affect tissues outside of the treatment area. Thus, you get the highest level of treatment without compromising safety and comfort.
What laser periodontal treatments do you offer?
Our procedures include laser periodontal disinfection (LPD), LANAP® (Laser-assisted new attachment procedure), and cosmetic gingival recontouring. LPD is largely a nonsurgical treatment to reduce inflammation and promote the reattachment of the gums to the roots of the teeth. It is used during scaling and root planing and periodontal maintenance therapies. LANAP is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional periodontal surgery to treat moderate to severe gum disease. It kills harmful bacteria and promotes healing without cutting and the need for sutures. Cosmetic recontouring recognizes that the appearance of your gums also plays an important role in the overall appearance of your smile. By reshaping the gums, we can create a balanced and attractive smile, with the height of the gums in proportion to the visible teeth.
Are lasers just for the gums?
No. We can also use laser therapy to treat the exposed root surfaces at the gumline. These root surfaces can become very sensitive and painful. By eliminating the bacteria associated with this discomfort, we can reduce sensitivity. Your comfort is supported.
Conditions like periodontal disease do not just affect your smile, either. The inflammation and infection can increase your risk of developing conditions like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
