How can you replace just one tooth?

Losing a single tooth can significantly impact your smile, health, and overall function. It can lead to misalignment and cause neighboring teeth to drift into the space, potentially damaging them. Additionally, losing a tooth is often associated with reduced jawbone density. This bone tissue is crucial for holding teeth in place and contributes to important functions such as chewing, speaking, and maintaining your appearance.

Dental crowns supported by dental implants are an excellent option for protecting and restoring your smile, youthful appearance, and confidence. Another common solution for tooth loss is dental bridges. While bridges may have a lower initial cost, they do not support jawbone health and density as implants do, and they typically don’t last as long as implant-supported teeth.

How do you replace a tooth with an implant?

An implant is a component of a new tooth surgically placed into the jawbone where the original tooth was. A natural tooth is held in position by its root, which is encased within the jawbone. This structure helps keep the supporting bone strong. Just as muscles stay strong through exercise and physical activity, the bone in your jaw remains healthy due to the biting, chewing, and grinding of food.

The implant is made from materials that integrate with the bone. Once this process occurs, the implant, now securely anchored in the jawbone, can be attached to a dental crown. The implant serves as the root to support the new tooth. The surrounding bone remains dense and healthy thanks to the stimulation transferred from the new tooth to the connected implant. This approach fills gaps and helps prevent the complications associated with progressive bone loss.

How do you replace multiple missing teeth?

Partial and full dentures are time-tested options that cost less than implants. However, like conventional dental bridges, they do not prevent or stop bone loss. They also require ongoing adjustments and even replacement over time. Due to the changes brought on by bone loss, these adjustments and services are necessary to restore the fit of the denture.

Implants are highly versatile. We can apply minimal implants to support dental bridges, and as few as four to six implants may be used to support a full upper or lower denture. Because the strength and health of the bone are retained, the fit of the denture is also maintained. With proper care, implant bridges and dentures can last a lifetime, though the restoration part of your dental implant will eventually need replacement.
